Jose Higareda and Martha Cervantes welcomed their baby girl, Martha Elba Guadalupe Higareda Cervantes, on August 24, 1983, in their humble abode in Tabasco, Mexico. Martha’s acting prowess came from her parents, who are both in the arts. Her sister, Miriam Higareda, also inherited the acting gene.
Martha got into acting at an early age and knew how to dance jazz and the flamenco. Because she always wanted to become an actress, she moved to Mexico City at 14 years old to have acting classes. Although Martha loves to act, the actress still wanted to finish college. So, she attended college at El Tecnologico de Monterrey in the morning and studied acting at night. Soon, her sister followed her to Mexico City to also take acting classes.
Martha’s first film appearance was in the movie, Amar te duele, with Luis Pena. Her movie immediately hit the box office record, and her fans nicknamed her “Mexican Sweetheart” because of her performance. She also got a Silver Goddess Award and an MTV Movie Award for her outstanding performance.
In 2003, Martha got her first TV lead role in the show, Enamorate, with Yahir. Although she loved her character, her first love is still making movies. Martha switched back to movie projects, starring in the film, Sexo, Amor y Otras perversiones, alongside Carlos Carrera. Because of her excellent performance, she received another Silver Goddess Award.
In her first American movie, Martha portrayed a leading role in the film, Borderland, in 2007. The film was her stepping stone into making Hollywood movies. She got discovered by an agent who introduced her to Craig Shapiro. Martha then moved to Hollywood to study scriptwriting and audition for movie projects. Later, she appeared in the movie Street Kings, alongside Keanu Reeves.
Martha was only 25 years old when she produced and wrote her first independent film. Martha is a genuinely genius artist because her movie hit the box office again. Then, in 2014, she wrote and produced another film called Casese Quien Pueda, which hit another box office record.
In 2018, she appeared as detective Kristin Ortega in the Netflix series, Altered Carbon. She also landed a lead role in another Netflix horror anthology series, Into the Dark: Culture Shock.
