She became the most successful and one of the most highest-paid actresses then. In 1936, she appeared in My Man Godfrey for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1940, she appeared in the film, Virgil in the Night. Her last film appearance was in To be or Not to Be in 1942.

From 1931-1933, she was married to William Powell. Later in 139, she married Clark Gable.
