A California coffee shop has found itself in hot water again, and it’s not because of the lattes. Bottoms Up Espresso is a franchise in the Bay Area known for its scantily clad baristas, but it seems that their sexy wardrobe is too much, or rather not enough, for American Canyon.

The steamy coffee shop is packing up their stuff after city council unanimously voted to revoke their license. Critics argued that Bottoms Up Espresso operated more like an adult business than a cafe, and after a community director met with owner Nate Wilson, he had this to say:“I met with one of the owners on Jan. 4, 2019 who informed me that he intends to require the employees at the American Canyon store to wear costumes that are as revealing as the costumes worn on staff at other Bottoms Up Espresso stores,” he said. “The business owner provided a ‘dress code’. The costumes in the ‘dress code’ are revealing to a degree that the business meets the definition of an adult business per the city’s Municipal Code.”

That Municipal Code requires workers to cover specific “anatomical areas” of the body, like the butt, underboob, and the pubic area, and even though Wilson doesn’t agree with the ruling, saying that he feels the “city has gone beyond the law”, Bottoms Up will “move on from that location”.“We have decided to move on from that location due to the fact the city will waste a bunch of taxpayers’ money to fight us in court, where if we wanted to make a point would win. We do not fall into ‘adult entertainment’ as they suggest. The license was revoked before we even opened or went to any appeals. The city is acting beyond their powers and shows you how even small government abuses their powers.”

The company found themselves underneath a pile of perfectly roasted coffee beans a while back too, when they were trying to open a location in Chico. At the time, Wilson argued that his baristas weren’t wearing anything Californians didn’t already see at the beach every day.“We are a very classy business and pride ourselves on customer service and quality drinks. We have dress codes that expose less then you would see at a pool or beach,” he said.

But unlike their American Canyon location, Bottoms Up Espresso is still brewing coffees in Chico. Mayor Sean Morgan called it “unfortunate”, but ultimately agreed that the business wasn’t violating any city code.
